Help with the apps

Here are the answers to what people ask most about the Balansebarn app and Balanseby. If what you need isn't here, write to me.

The Balansebarn app

How do I sign in?

Tap More, then Log in, and enter your email address. You'll get a code by email to type into the app. There's no password to remember.

The code never arrived

Check your spam folder for an email from Balansebarn. If it isn't there either, wait a minute and ask for a new code. Codes only last a short while, so use the latest one.

What notifications does the app send?

Right after you sign in, the app asks once whether you'd like notifications. There are two kinds, «Important news» and «New in Balanseby», and both are rare. Turn each one off or on under More, then Notifications, and tapping a notification opens the page it's about.

How do I delete my account?

Sign in, open your profile and tap «Delete your account» at the bottom. Your bookmarks, quotes, course progress and Balanseby lists go with it, and so do your comments.

I want to report a comment

Tap «Report» by the comment and say briefly what's wrong. The report comes straight to me. If you'd rather not see someone's comments at all, you can hide them from the same place.

Balanseby

What does Balanseby cost?

Nothing. Balanseby is free, with no ads and nothing to buy, and it's staying that way. It's in Norwegian.

Where do we get the app?

For now Balanseby is a beta for iPhone and iPad, installed through TestFlight, Apple's app for test versions. The town is also open to everyone at balansebarn.no/balanseby.

Why does the app ask for a parent's email?

So that a grown-up says yes before a child is in. The child picks «Barn», a birth year and a symbol, then types a parent's email, and the parent gets a code to type into the app or read out to the child. Only then is the profile made, along with a balansebarn.no account if you don't have one yet. The email is used for the code and nothing else.

How does a grown-up sign in?

Choose «Voksen» on the first screen, or under Bytt profil in the Mer menu, and enter your own email address. You'll get a code by email to type into the app, just like in the Balansebarn app. The sums go away, and whatever you tick off is kept on your own account.

Why does a grown-up have to answer a sum?

Links that lead out of the app, and the feedback form, only open once a grown-up has answered. If a grown-up is the one using the app, choose Voksen under Mer and the sums go away.

What do you store about the child?

A symbol and a birth year, plus a first name only if you add one on your profile page. It sits on the child's profile on your account, with the cards they've ticked off or given a heart. The email and the code are cleared after a day, and there's no tracking or analytics in the app. There's more in the privacy policy.

How do I change or remove a child's profile?

Sign in at balansebarn.no and open your profile page, which is in Norwegian like Balanseby. Under «Barna i Balanseby» you can give the child a first name, correct the year, log their devices out or remove the profile. In the app, Mer has «Bytt profil» and «Logg ut av denne enheten».

The app looks out of date

Close the app completely and open it again. Balanseby fetches the latest version when it opens, and shows «Henter siste versjon» while it does.
