Philips SmartSleep Wake-up Light
A more natural way to wake up, with a “sunrise” and gentle sounds on the bedside table.

Positives
- It wakes you with light: half an hour before the alarm, dawn breaks on the bedside table, red through orange to yellow, and only then does the sound fade in. Pick birdsong, ocean waves, radio and more.
- It works in reverse too: the sunset mode dims the light slowly while your child winds down, and a double tap turns on a faint, warm night light.
- The real win: with the wake-up living on the bedside table, the phone never needs to enter the bedroom, yours or the teenager's.
Worth knowing
- About €200 is a lot of money for an alarm clock. The light is what you're paying for, and the same range includes simpler, cheaper models.
- Everything is set using the buttons on the lamp itself, so allow for some fiddling on the first evening.
My assessment
You're not really buying a lamp, you're buying what it moves: the wake-up back onto the bedside table and the phone out of the bedroom. It earns its keep most on Norwegian winter mornings, when it stays dark long after the day has started.
It is expensive, and cheaper alternatives exist. But this is the one actually standing in our house, the girls have one each, so this is the one I can vouch for.
