Positives
- Calls, messages and GPS with contacts you've approved, and nothing beyond that: no browser, no social media, no app store, no games.
- An SOS button and safe zones: the watch tells you if your child leaves the area you've agreed on.
- School mode pauses calls and messages during lessons while the SOS button stays live.
- A Norwegian company with a Norwegian app, and the SIM card arrives already fitted. Shrugs off water and dust (IP68).
Worth knowing
- The price tag is only the beginning. The Xplora Connect subscription is compulsory, from about €15 a month, so budget around another €170 a year.
- The watch shows you where your child is, and that shouldn't be a secret. Tell your child what you can see and why, so the watch reads as safety rather than surveillance.
- Steps turn into “Xplora Coins” that can be swapped for prizes. Gamification of the mild sort, but worth knowing about.
My assessment
A good first step for the child who's too young for a phone but old enough to walk home from school alone. You can reach each other, you can see the walk home went fine, and that's the entire job the watch exists to do. Put the subscription into the maths before you buy.
