Smiling Mind

The free one: over 700 exercises written by psychologists, from an Australian non-profit.

Roughly ages 7 and upFree
Independent recommendation. No commission.
Positives
  • Made by an Australian non-profit whose mission is making mental training available to everyone, not selling subscriptions.
  • More than 700 meditations, lessons and exercises developed by psychologists, sorted by goals like sleep, stress and focus.
  • Dedicated programmes for classrooms and for parents, plus a daily mood check-in that steers what it recommends.
Worth knowing
  • Everything is in English, and the tone is more grown-up than Headspace or Roo. Best from around age 13, and for you as a parent.
  • Some sessions sit behind a padlock and need a paid plan. Most don't.
My assessment

If you'd like to try meditation without signing up for yet another subscription, start here. If the app is still in use a month later, the habit has stuck and you can look at the paid options. There's a fair chance you'll never need them.
